"Anna Bella creates, in the first half of the 1970s, a cosmic cartography in a considerable set of photo-silkscreens named Polarities/Lunars. Subtly, the United States, which was leading a race to the moon in dispute with the Soviet Union, is present in these representations related to space conquest. Using material provided by the US consulate in Rio de Janeiro, the artist appropriated photographs of planet Earth and the lunar surface produced by NASA space travel. Present in several works by the artist, the shape of the X is related to photographic images in which the lack of sharpness would lead to discarding and destruction. In the artist's hands, the rejection mark was reworked and made positive, becoming a sign of the access barrier to the spaces produced by the image itself, when mapping the surface from a, so to speak, geopolitical point of view. The neutral sign X also appears between words, such as right-wrong, outside-in, for example, in other works."
