A Gentil Carioca

  • A Gentil Carioca is a contemporary art gallery founded on September 6th 2003 by three artists - Márcio Botner, Ernesto Neto & Laura Lima - an initiative that makes it unique in Brazil. It is run by Márcio Botner and Elsa Ravazzolo Botner, who is also a partner. Its main objective is to become a place for thinking, producing, experimenting, celebrating and commercializing art.

A Gentil was born with the mission of capturing and disseminating the diversity of art in Brazil and around the world. It believes that each work of art is a cultural expression with the power to radiate culture and education. Its spaces become centers for the convergence and dissemination of the voices of different artists and ideas. The initiative also promotes the expansion of the field of action of art, encouraging the formation of a network of collectors and art lovers in general.

The gallery is located in the Historic Centre of Rio de Janeiro, specifically in the Saara area. Founded in the last century by Arab and Jewish immigrants, this area is home to the largest open market in Latin America. In the Saara, you can find all kinds of trinkets and spices, attracting artists and the curious. A Gentil Carioca is located in two 1920s townhouses, joined by a crossroads.

In 2021, on its 18th anniversary, A Gentil Carioca opened a new exhibition space in São Paulo's Central Zone. Located in a charming house in the Higienópolis neighborhood, the venue reflects the desire to provide artists with active exchanges in a multicultural and global city.
