Renata Lucas | O Perde

12 Feb - 26 Mar 2022
Overview

A Gentil Carioca is pleased to present O Perde, the first solo exhibition by Renata Lucas at the gallery space in São Paulo.
If a line drawn on the ground defines a symbolic or representational field, that same line drawn also configures a game, by defining opposite fields.

In her exhibition, Renata has built her field of representation by placing a pool table in a deactivated parking lot in the village. Currently closed, like almost everything in the area, the parking lot is located at an equidistant point between the gallery and the Consolação Graveyard.

The table installed in the idle establishment serves as a boundary for a game between the working world and the inoperative world. The table has been modified so that the pocketed balls are routed into channels in the ground, dumping them in the neighborhood through the drain pipe. The game appears here as a mediator between action and dispersion, but also as a time shuffler.

Disconnected from the origin, the ball that is played here also falls elsewhere. As if in a ghostly movement (or automaton), on the one hand it reappears between the gallery walls, on the other, it appears expelled through an open hole in the graveyard wall, as if in a crossed mirror between the territory of the living and the dead.
