Os temas abordados nas pinturas são velhos conhecidos do artista: migrações – em especial aquelas ocasionadas pelo tráfico negreiro – e a questão da identidade étnica. Seus personagens já consagrados se repetem, gerando uma reflexão sobre identidade e representação. É o caso, por exemplo de Benjamin de Oliveira, o primeiro palhaço negro brasileiro. Benjamin, nascido ainda no período escravocrata, fugiu aos 12 anos de idade para se juntar ao circo. Além da atuação no circo, escreveu e atuou em diversas peças.
