Frieze NY 2024

1 - 5 Apr 2024

For Frieze New York 2024, A Gentil Carioca [Booth B03] presents a dialog between works by Brazilian artists Laura Lima and Vivian Caccuri and Angolan artist Ana Silva.

In Laura Lima's practice, the use of living matter incites tensions and mutations. The vital praxis of the time of experience and philosophical practice are fundamental elements in her work, which varies from medium to medium. Her works made from braided fabric threads, for example, are in constant transformation, with their conclusion being set  in the future due to the action of natural materials that slowly transmute.

Vivian Caccuri experiments with sound in unusual compositions that disorient the conventional arrangement of everyday experiences. The artist's investigations touch on the body, memory and history, and from these elements she builds delicate canvases stitched and intertwined with threads and lines, stones and beads, which feature mysterious landscapes, as well as sound sculptures that emanate sometimes delirium, sometimes noise, sometimes melodies and mantras.

Ana Silva's work arises from the exploration of easily accessible materials, referring to her personal experience of scarcity in Angola. Using the technique of sewing and embroidery on braided plastic bags and crinolines, Ana creates characters in an attempt to add value and poetry to the existence of the material, highlighting its trajectory and its potential for transformation.
