Viva Candeia! Viva a intelectualidade diversa!
"The sambista doesn't need to be a member of the academy, he needs to be natural with his poetry, and the people make him immortal." This phrase, which Candeia put into song form decades ago, expresses well what the sambista is and the intellectuality of his art, affirming the fact that he doesn't need the approval of third parties for what he does. The people immortalizing the samba dancer shows that intellectuality is not only found in institutions like the Brazilian Academy of Letters or in universities, but in various forms and contexts. The sambista immortalized by the people of Candeia represents very well the intellectuality that is out there with the people, bringing together different types of knowledge. Intellectuals exist in the countless houses of this country, in the umbanda and candomblé terreiros, in the samba circles, on the streets, in the alleys, in the fields of várzea, in the botequins, and in the most diverse environments and places, in the most diverse cultures and manifestations.
Long live Candeia! Long live the diverse intellectuality!
Work inspired by the excerpt from the song "O Testamento de Partideiro" by Candeia, released in 1975.
